Sightseeing Hamburg – some ‘must sees’

Hamburg harbor

  1. The Harbor
  2. The ‘Michel’
  3. The Town Hall
  4. The Reeperbahn
  5. The Alster
  6. Elbe Philharmonic Hall, Warehouse District and HarborCity

1. The harbor:

It is the pulse of the city, the one that brought Hamburg to wealth and prosperity.

That which started out as a small basin within the city, is now Europe’s second largest sea port. We handle about 10 million containers every year, have approx. ½ million cruise ship guests and offer numerous events and all sorts of entertainment in and around the harbor.

A tour of the harbor should be part of every sightseeing Hamburg. Many harbor tours start at Landungsbruecken.

Port HamburgIf you go there, don’ t miss to peek into the Old Elbe tunnel from 1911 with its wooden elevators for (small) cars or pedestrians. You can cross the Elbe by foot and will be rewarded with a beautiful harbor panorama, once you are on the other side of the river Elbe (about 15 min. later).

Enjoy the special ambience, maybe you want to sit on an old quay wall, listen to the seagulls or enjoy a cocktail in one of our harbor beach clubs. No matter what you do, the harbor will capture your attention.

2. The ‘Michel’ (as the local like to call it):

This beautiful neo baroque church is Hamburg’s No 1 and historic landmark. It is said to be northern Germany’s most beautiful church.

Its wide open and light interior, 4 organs and an impressive acoustics makes it a great location for classical music. If you want to see Hamburg with a bird’s eye, go up the tower and enjoy a 360 ° view of the city.

town-hall-city-hamburg3. The town hall in the heart of the city:

This elborate neo-renaissance building from 1897 expresses the wealth and prosperity, as well as the independence of the State of Hamburg and its rebublican tradition.
Enjoy the courtyard with the beautiful fountain, an oasis in the middle of the busy city.

4. The Reeperbahn:

This is Hamburg’s infamous red light district, the ‘sinful strip’, with pubs, night clubs, bars, sex shops, table dance bars, brothels, but also with theaters, music clubs and restaurants. It is open 24/7 and you find all types of entertainment there.

Back to list

5. The Alster:

Hamburg’s ‘lakes’ in the middle of the city. A popular recreational area and a beautiful place to relax.

Back to list

6. Elbe Philharmonic Hall, Warehouse District and HarborCity:

The Warehouse District is one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites and definitely a must see.

So is the HarborCity, Europe’s most ambitious inner-city development, that combines state of the art architecture with sustainability.

Hamburg’s impressive new concert hall, the Elbe Philharmonic Hall, is located in the Sandtorhafen, a historic harbour basin. If you would like to take part in a guided tour of the Elbphilharmonie, including the Grand Concert Hall, please visit this website.

If you would like to see the Historic Warehouse District and the Elbphilharmonie Plaza (without Concert Hall) during a guided tour, please have a look at our private tour Elbe Philharmonic Hall and Warehouse District Tour. During this tour we will visit the platform of the Elbe Philharmonic Hall and the observation deck.

Feedback

  • “Great tour”

We had a great tour with the tour guide Jutta. She could provide us all the answers to our questions. We will definitly book her again.

  • “Wonderful Tour”

My wife and I booked a three hour walking tour of Hamburg with Jutta.

    It was excellent.

Jutta clearly loves her work and loves her city, and it's infectious, more of an afternoon out with an old friend; enormously fun and highly educational.

In one afternoon we visited many fascinating sites, several that we would never have found on our own, travelled on boats and trains, and even found time for a coffee in a typical roast-house.

One of our best ever city tours - put this at the very top of your list of things to do in this fascinating city!

  • “A friendly and easy going tour guide”

Jutta met me at my hotel we spent the morning seeing some of the sights of Hamburg.

She was very informative and I was able to ask lots of questions about the city. This was a great help for the rest of my stay as I was able to visit places she suggested and I was interested in.

It was a great introduction to Hamburg for me.

She was also very efficient answering my emails to arrange the tour. I would recommend her to show you Hamburg, a very friendly and easy going guide.

  • “Friendly, Fun and Flexible!”

Jutta is probably one of the best private guide we know. First of all, she is flexible which is so important.

Some guides follow a set routine and expect you to follow them. Jutta is different in that she instinctively works out what you would like to do and than come up with very valid suggestions.

She also fits in especially since we are eaters as well as tourers so it was fun having snacks and bratwurst along the way with kaffe und kuchen at every opportunity.

She also knows Hamburg well and is very proficient in English so, all in all, an excellent guide and not to be missed. p.s. She does look a bit like Mary Poppins!

  • “Fantastic Personal Tour Guide!”

Jutta went above and beyond what she had agreed to do. She even met us at the train station the day we arrived just to make sure we got transportation to our hotel.

Her tour of Hamburg the next day was so interesting and informative - just the right mix of riding and walking; plus we learned so much of Hamburg's history and traditions.

She arranged for our personal guide on an evening tour of the Reeperbahn and helped us with walking maps and U Bahn directions.

We could not have asked for a better personal guide

  • “Excellent tour guide”

Thanks to Jutta my husband and I had an a great overview of the city so we were able to navigate on our own.

We met Jutta at our hotel and proceeded on a mostly walking tour of the city. Jutta is very knowledgeable on Hamburg's history and very pleasant to talk to.

We highly recommend a tour with Jutta when visiting Hamburg!

  • “Perfect introduction to Hamburg”

I booked a private tour and driver with Jutta. It was a great way to get familiar with the city.

They picked us up at our hotel and drove us through many beautiful areas of the city.

Jutta was very knowledgeable and gave a lot of information about the history of the area, as well as pointers for the rest of our stay.

I would highly recommend arranging a tour with Jutta Hülsmann.

  • Great Tour

My family of 6 embarked on Hamburg with Jutta for 4 hours. She picked us up at the airport with a van and we began our journey across the area.

The whole trip felt very seamless and well planned.

We got out at a few key areas and walked around including the Rathaus and St Michael's.... her extensive knowledge was great and at the right speed for our family.

She also did some unsual places that we wouldn't have heard of.

We had 2 kids (5&8) and she did a nice job "letting them be" and not trying to force anything too much, but engaging and asking questions at times so they felt included.

Also I found Jutta to have a very casual and approachable manner.... not too forced and natural.

Overall a joy and we would fully recommend her! Trying to think of another opportunity to utilize her again!

  • First Priority in Hamburg !

If you really want to enjoy your visit to Hamburg, make your first priority a guided tour with Jutta Hülsmann.

As we walked round this impressive city with her, we found her confident depth of knowledge, her enthusiasm for this city and detailed insights invaluable.

She was extremely accommodating in tailoring our visit to our particular interests; nothing seemed to phase her.

Best of all, Jutta’s warm personality and unfailing good humour made for a truly enjoyable day - we delighted in her company, so much so we extended our tour with her.

We couldn’t recommend Jutta highly enough. If you are able to engage her as a guide, you will be lucky indeed. Viel Glück !
